The Wilderness Beyond Lake Inari

Between Lake Inari and the Norwegian border lies a rugged mosaic of pine forests, wetlands, and countless small lakes—a remote landscape that challenges all but the most experienced hikers. In the northeast rises the fell ridge of Vätsäri, whose birch forests were devastated by outbreaks of autumnal moth larvae. The stony fjords of Lake Inari extend deep into the wilderness, where traditional livelihoods still persist.

The waters here are rich with fish, including whitefish, trout, char, and grayling. Paddlers favor the narrow fjords and make use of the short portage routes connecting the lakes. Routasenkuru Gorge has earned an almost legendary reputation, and the Piilola Trail links Vätsäri to Norway’s Øvre Pasvik National Park.
