Durston Kakwa 55
The Kakwa 55 is a premium ultralight backpack engineered from the ground up with a focus on ergonomics and serious load-carrying capability. Designed by long-distance hiker Dan Durston and refined through thousands of trail miles, it delivers class-leading comfort, durability, and organization—all at under 900 grams.
True Load Support in an Ultralight Package
Unlike most packs in its weight category, the Kakwa 55 doesn’t cut corners when it comes to structure. Where other ultralight designs compromise by omitting essential support features, the Kakwa 55 stands out with a full internal frame, load lifters, contoured shoulder straps, and a structured hipbelt—all optimized to carry up to 20 kg comfortably.
Its internal frame uses a hollow aluminum tube, offering both vertical and horizontal rigidity with less weight than traditional stays. This frame is directly connected to the hipbelt and load lifters, transferring weight efficiently to your hips for long-haul comfort. The S-shaped shoulder straps are carefully contoured for an ergonomic fit, while the dual-pull hipbelt system allows for a snug, easy adjustment.
Premium Materials, Built to Last
The Kakwa 55 is available in two high-performance fabrics:
-
Ultra 200X: Woven primarily from UHMWPE fibers (commonly known as Dyneema®), Ultra 200X is multiple times stronger and more abrasion-resistant than traditional nylon fabrics. It’s laminated to a waterproof film backing, and the new “X” version features an upgraded inner film for even greater durability.
-
UltraGrid: A tough, PU-coated nylon fabric with UHMWPE ripstop reinforcement. It’s smoother to the touch, has a denser weave, and offers a more budget-friendly alternative without compromising reliability.
Every pack is fully double-stitched with bar-tacked stress points, durable flat-felled seams, and reinforced mesh and elastic components to ensure long-term integrity.
Smart Access, Thoughtful Organization
Ultralight doesn’t mean sacrificing convenience. The Kakwa 55 offers quick, intuitive access to your gear, so you spend less time searching and more time hiking. The layout includes:
-
Hipbelt pockets: Easy to open one-handed, sized for snacks, sunscreen, headlamps, or your phone.
-
Shoulder strap pockets: Dual top-access compartments ideal for phones, sunglasses, or water bottles.
-
QuickPocket: A unique side-access stretch pocket for larger essentials like gloves, maps, or snacks—reachable without removing the pack.
-
Large front mesh pocket: Durable and minimally stretchy, perfect for bulky items like a rain jacket, shelter, or cook kit.
