The Durston Wapta 30 is a next-generation ultralight backpack built from innovative ALUULA Graflyte™ fabric. Weighing just around half a kilogram, it stands out from other frameless packs with an exceptional combination of functional features, thoughtful design, outstanding ergonomics, and superb carrying comfort. The advanced fabric delivers an impressive balance of minimal weight and excellent durability.

The guiding principle behind the Wapta was to create a backpack so light and comfortable that you won’t want to take it off during the day. To achieve this, it combines a range of carefully engineered features rarely found together in a pack of this weight: a supportive hip belt with generously sized pockets, ergonomic padded S-shaped shoulder straps, an ALUULA Graflyte™ bottom pocket, spacious side pockets, shoulder strap mesh pockets, and a ventilated back panel.

The Wapta truly excels on ultralight backpacking trips where carrying several days’ worth of food is unnecessary, while also being an outstanding choice for a wide variety of day hikes and outdoor adventures.

Materials & Construction

The Wapta 30 is constructed primarily from ALUULA Graflyte™, an advanced composite fabric featuring a 100% woven UHMWPE face fabric laminated to a durable waterproof film. Unlike conventional laminates, ALUULA’s patented manufacturing process heat-bonds the UHMWPE fabric directly to the waterproof film, eliminating the need for adhesive layers that add weight and can deteriorate over time. The result is a lighter, stronger, and more durable fabric with a weight of just 98 g/m².

The heat-bonding properties of ALUULA Graflyte™ are also utilized elsewhere throughout the pack. The ventilated back panels are heat-bonded directly to the back panel, while the fabric’s exceptionally stable cut edges allow laser-cut drainage holes to be incorporated into the front and side pockets.

Fully taped seams make the pack effectively waterproof, although a waterproof liner or dry bag is still recommended for moisture-sensitive equipment.

Carry Comfort

Although the Wapta is a frameless backpack, carrying comfort has been a primary design objective. The shoulder straps are ergonomically shaped to follow the natural contours of the shoulders and feature an S-shaped profile that fits a wide variety of body types. They also incorporate ALUULA Durflyte™ daisy chain attachment points for adjustable sternum strap positioning.

The padded, anatomically shaped hip belt offers an exceptional level of support compared to most backpacks in this weight class. Weighing just 115 g, the hip belt can also be removed entirely when carrying lighter loads.

The back panel features raised ventilation pads made from breathable mesh fabric helping to improve airflow and carrying comfort, an uncommon feature among backpacks this light.
