Polycryo (also known as Polycro) is the lightest possible ground sheet for ultralight backpacking. It is made from bio-based PolyEarthylene® polyolefin, a material that is extremely durable for its thickness. At first glance it looks like thin construction plastic, but its appearance is misleading, as the strong structure makes it significantly tougher than it seems.

Polycryo has become a classic choice among ultralight hikers, and it has been our own preferred ground sheet when tarp camping for many years. The size is 183 × 244 cm. It packs down to a very small volume and adds almost no weight to your gear. It also works well as a cost-effective and much lighter alternative to a traditional tent footprint.

In use, Polycryo does not require any special techniques. It performs reliably as long as sharp sticks and debris are cleared from the ground beforehand. Despite its ultralight nature, it is surprisingly durable, and small holes can be easily repaired with duct tape to extend its lifespan. Because it is so light, it can lift in the wind, so the corners should be secured with rocks or gear. The names Polycryo and Polycro are both used for the same material.
