The Katabatic Gear Bristlecone Bivy is a hiker’s best companion when paired with a tarp, especially during mosquito season. In addition to keeping the bugs out, the Bristlecone’s breathable yet water-resistant top fabric protects against light splashes in damp weather, while the waterproof bathtub-style floor keeps your sleeping pad dry. Breathability of the top fabric is key here, as it prevents body moisture from condensing on the inside of the bivy and wetting your sleeping bag overnight.

Weighing just a touch over 200 grams, the Bristlecone Bivy is lighter than virtually any inner tent, yet offers better protection than a separate groundsheet and bug net combination. It’s also far easier to set up. On top of being ultralight, it packs down incredibly small and when used with a tarp, your entire shelter system takes up only a fraction of your pack’s volume.

The bivy works best with A-frame style tarps but also pairs nicely with pyramid tarps that have tie-outs for the end peak lines. A generously sized U-shaped zipper runs from the waist over the ridgeline to the other side, making it easy to slide in and get comfortable.

For fast and light adventures, packability is just as important as weight. In these situations, a tarp and a separate bivy make the best shelter combination. The Katabatic Gear Bristlecone Bivy is precisely engineered and made from premium materials, achieving exceptional low weight and compactness without compromising performance. The waterproof ROBIC® nylon floor with silicone/UTS coating is exceptionally durable and less slippery than typical silicone-coated nylons. The floor design minimizes unnecessary seams to ensure full waterproofness. The top fabric, Pertex® Quantum Air, allows moisture to escape while providing splash protection. A large No-see-um mesh panel over the face lets your breath flow freely while keeping insects out.

The Bristlecone Bivy includes integrated sleeping pad attachment cords that keep your pad securely in place throughout the night. These cords are designed to align perfectly with the attachment points on Katabatic Gear quilts, allowing you to connect both the pad and quilt to the same system for a seamless setup. The bivy also features tie-out points at both ends for attaching to trekking poles or tarp guy lines, and corner loops for staking down.

Despite its ultralight design, the Bristlecone Bivy offers generous interior space. There’s room for some gear inside, and all size options fit a sleeping pad up to 64 cm wide. A 7-gram stuff sack is included.
