The Katabatic Gear Piñon Bivy is an ideal companion for tarp users, especially during bug season. In addition to keeping mosquitoes at bay, the Piñon’s breathable yet water-resistant upper protects against occasional splashes that make their way under a tarp in damp conditions, while the waterproof bathtub floor keeps your sleeping pad dry. Breathability is critical, as it prevents moisture from your body from condensing on the inside of the bivy and wetting your sleeping bag. The Piñon’s extra-large mesh panel ensures excellent ventilation.

At just 221 grams, the Piñon Bivy weighs less than even the lightest inner tents, while still offering better protection than a separate bug net and groundsheet combination. Setup is also significantly simpler. In addition to its low weight, the Katabatic Gear Piñon Bivy packs down extremely small, and when paired with a tarp, your shelter system takes up only a fraction of your pack volume.

The bivy performs best with A-frame tarps, but also pairs well with pyramid shelters that have attachment points for the head and foot tie-outs. The Piñon Bivy features a generously sized U-shaped zipper that runs from the waist area, over the ridgeline, and down the other side, making it easy to get in and settle down.

For fast and light travel, packability is just as important as weight. In this context, a tarp paired with a separate bivy is a natural choice. The Katabatic Gear Piñon Bivy has been carefully designed and constructed from premium materials to minimize weight and packed size without compromising performance. The waterproof floor is made from silicone/UTS-coated ROBIC® nylon, which is exceptionally durable and less slippery than typical silicone-treated fabrics. Unnecessary seams have also been eliminated to ensure maximum waterproofness. The Pertex® Quantum Air upper fabric allows moisture to escape while still providing protection from splashes. An extra-large no-see-um mesh panel in front of the face allows breath to pass through freely, offering full insect protection while ensuring unrestricted airflow.

The Piñon Bivy features integrated sleeping pad attachment cords that keep your pad securely in place throughout the night. These cords are designed to align with the attachment points of Katabatic Gear quilts, allowing the quilt to be easily secured using the same system that holds the pad in place. Tie-out points at the head and foot ends allow the bivy to be suspended from trekking poles or attached to a tarp’s existing guy points. Corner loops are included for staking the bivy to the ground.

The Piñon Bivy is also generously sized for a bivy. There is enough room inside for some gear, and all sizes accommodate a 64 cm wide sleeping pad. A stuff sack is included and weighs 7 grams.
