We have been researching the snowshoe market for a while, looking or the lightest and most practical options. American brand Northern Lites emerged as the clear winner.

The Northern Lites Elite snowshoes are designed to extend your hiking season into those months when there’s too much snow to walk, but not enough to ski. They are significantly lighter to carry across snowless patches than skis. The Elite is also the best choice for ski tourers who want snowshoes for walking around camp, for example when taking photos. Elites are an excellent option for well-packed winter trails as well.

We’ve equipped the Elite with Northern Lites’ original Tru Trak bindings, which are not only the lightest available but also pack flat against each other. This makes them easy to carry on the outside of a backpack or in a sled.

The Northern Lites Elites have been used to win the world’s longest and toughest winter ultramarathon, the Iditarod Trail Invitational.

A kilo on your feet feels like five kilos in your pack, even in winter. Northern Lites crafts ultra-light yet durable snowshoes in Colorado. The Elite model is their most versatile snowshoe: light enough for racing, but tough enough to handle thousand-mile winter ultra marathons across the wilderness of Alaska.

Weighing in at an ultra-light 1.2 kilograms per pair, the Elites are about half the weight of standard 25″ deck snowshoes. The frame is made from sturdy 7075-T6 aluminum, and the deck is a military-grade COOLTHANE®-coated nylon mesh. The two-piece crampons on the bottom are crafted from duraluminum and feature an antiball plate to prevent snow build-up.

We’ve selected the snowshoes with the original Tru Trak bindings, the lightest option available, with a proven track record of durability based on Northern Lites’ 30+ years of experience. Tru Trak uses three flexible straps, making them foolproof and easy to repair. The flat profile of the Tru Trak bindings allows for extremely compact packing, fitting snugly on the outside of a backpack or in a sled.

We’ve chosen the Elite model specifically with four uses in mind:

A hiking tool for transitional seasons when there’s not yet enough snow for skiing
A fast and agile snowshoe for packed trails, snowmobile tracks, or alpine packed snow

The Men’s Elite is slightly wider than the Women’s model, with a slightly thicker frame. The recommended carrying capacity is 82 kg, though it depends on snow conditions.
