For years, we’ve scoured the snowshoe market in search of the lightest and most practical options. The clear winner? American-made Northern Lites.

The Northern Lites Elite snowshoe is perfect for extending your hiking season into months when there’s too much snow for hiking but too little for skiing. It’s far lighter and easier to carry over snow-free patches than skis. The Elite is also an excellent choice for ski tourers who want snowshoes at camp, making it easier to move around with equipment like a camera. It’s the best lightweight option for packed winter trails as well.

The women’s model of the Elite has a slightly narrower frame and lighter tubing, making it even lighter to carry.

We selected the Elite with Northern Lites’ original Tru Trak binding—the lightest option available that also packs flat when stacked. This design allows you to easily carry them on the outside of a pack or sled.

A pound on your feet feels like five pounds in your pack—even in winter. Northern Lites crafts ultra-light yet highly durable snowshoes in Colorado, and the Elite is their most versatile model. Light enough for racing but durable enough for 1,000-mile winter ultramarathons through the Alaskan wilderness, the Elite is built for any adventure.

With an ultra-lightweight of under 1.2 kg per pair, the Elites are about half the weight of typical 25″ snowshoes. Their frame is made from robust 7075-T6 aluminum, and the deck is crafted from military-grade COOLTHANE®-coated nylon mesh. The two-part crampon, made from duraluminum, includes an anti-snowballing plate to prevent snow buildup on the underside.

We chose the original Tru Trak bindings, Northern Lites’ lightest and most durable option, proven over 30 years. The Tru Trak binding features three flexible straps, making it foolproof and easy to repair. Plus, the flat Tru Trak bindings allow the Elites to pack more compactly on the outside of a pack or sled than almost any other snowshoe.
