The Bonfus Maxus 80L is undoubtedly the most anticipated backpack release of the year. Information about this new backpack has been slowly leaking throughout the year. The design process has been meticulous, with the details being refined carefully. Bonfus’ master designer Niccolo Bonfadini has ensured that every aspect of the backpack is just right. The result is nothing less than the best backpack that 2024 technology can offer.

Maxus is a lightweight, large backpack that easily carries 80 liters of heavy load. Its DNA is rooted in demanding expeditions: the Maxus is a full-fledged expedition pack for treks requiring large food loads, winter gear, packrafting equipment, climbing gear, or hunting supplies. It is also a great first lightweight backpack for hikers embarking on their initial treks with heavy and bulky gear, and might only graduate to such trips after years of experience.

Maxus can hold everything, and is over three times lighter than other backpacks of similar size.

Bonfus Maxus 80L

Those in need of a large backpack have long had to settle for traditional models that often weigh over three and a half kilos. This has bothered us, as many hikers carry large gear and don’t need any extra weight from their backpack. Modern lightweight backpack options for packrafting or winter use have also been scarce. The new Bonfus Maxus 80L fills this gap in the most brilliant way.

The Bonfus Maxus 80L is designed as an expedition backpack for challenging trips. It has a large capacity and special attention has been paid to external attachment points on the top, bottom, sides, and back. The backpack excels in carrying large items, making it easy to include awkwardly shaped gear from PFDs to bulky tents to snowshoes.

Great attention has been paid to carrying comfort. The large hip belt and extra-wide shoulder straps attach directly to the frame, enhancing carrying capacity and evenly distributing load. Special attention has been given to the design of the hip belt, including its size, materials, attachment mechanism, and side tightening straps for load stabilization.

The modern fabrics used are the best currently available for backpacks. The main fabric is Ultra 200X, the bottom is Ultra 400X, and the hip belt, shoulder straps, and side pockets use 210d Ultragrid. The weight-to-durability ratio of the fabrics is something you won’t find from traditional backpack manufacturers. The adjustable torso length fits various users, and the hip belt is available in two different lengths.

Construction:

  • Ultralight design philosophy: The Maxus backpack is designed to be as light as possible while being able to carry heavy loads.
  • Strong and stable: The hip belt and shoulder straps of the Maxus attach directly to the aluminum frame, providing a stable connection and excellent weight transfer.
  • Enhanced hip belt comfort and stability: The hip belt is essential for comfortable carrying. The Maxus hip belt features dense 12.5 mm foam that provides appropriate stiffness and excellent weight transfer to the hips. Additionally, there is a second 12.5 mm foam layer in the lower back area, for a total of 25 mm padding. This thick lower back padding locks the backpack in place, preventing it from slipping under heavy loads. The removable extra padding adapts to various body shapes. The base of the hip belt is made of UltraGrid fabric, protecting the 3D mesh when placing the backpack on abrasive surfaces. Two wide ladder lock buckles allow the hip belt straps to be pulled inward. The sides of the belt attach to a 2 cm wide strap, which can be tightened to stabilize the backpack on the hips and prevent swaying in difficult terrain.
  • Adjustable shoulder straps: The shoulder straps can be adjusted by sliding them on the frame, allowing the backpack to fit the user’s torso length for better fit and comfort.
  • High-strength 7075 aluminum frame: The Maxus frame is made of 7075 aluminum, ensuring the highest strength and stiffness.
  • Extra-long frame for better load lifter angle: The frame length is 64 cm, ensuring a better load lifter angle for efficient carrying of heavy loads.

External attachment options:

  • Versatile external attachment points: The Maxus has numerous external attachment options. Each side has two buckle compression straps, useful when the backpack is not fully packed. They also allow attachment of items like skis, tents, and sleeping mats.
  • Front attachment loops: The front of the backpack has eight attachment loops, which can be combined with up to four Gatekeeper straps (sold separately) to add versatility and capacity, allowing attachment of heavy or bulky items to the outside of the backpack.
  • Bottom attachment points: The bottom of the backpack has four attachment points, which can attach up to two Gatekeeper straps (sold separately) for securing a sleeping pad or tent.
  • Spacious front mesh pocket: The front mesh pocket is made of UltraStretch fabric with an accordion-like structure that swallows a lot of gear, providing extra space for large but lightweight items.
  • Handy Y-strap: The roll-top Y-strap features an extra-long strap, perfect for storing and securing accessories.
  • Ice axe loop: The ice axe loop ensures readiness for all terrains.
  • Storage space on shoulder straps: The daisy chain on the shoulder straps has space for extra pockets or other gear.
  • Drainage holes in side pockets: Each side pocket has a drainage hole.

Materials:

Ultra 200 X (130gsm | 3.85oz/sqy): Probably the most advanced backpack fabric on the market. The main fabric is woven from 200D UHMWPE fiber. Although the weight is slightly higher than DCF2.92, Ultra 200 X fabric has three times the tear strength, three times more UHMWPE fibers, and seven times the abrasion resistance. The back of the fabric features a 0.75 mil polyester film and an X grid, making the fabric extremely waterproof. This fabric is used as the main material of the backpack.

Ultra 400 X (168gsm | 4.95oz/sqy): The main fabric is woven from 400D UHMWPE fiber. The back of the fabric features a 0.75 mil polyester film and an X grid, making the fabric extremely waterproof. It offers about twice the abrasion resistance compared to Ultra 200 X. This fabric is used at the bottom of the backpack.

UltraGrid (146gsm | 4.3oz/sqy): UltraGrid™ is woven from 210D recycled nylon yarn. The 5 mm 200D Ultra™ grid double ripstop provides exceptional tear strength. UltraGrid™ is coated with a water-repellent finish that is PFC-free. The fabric is finished with a waterproof 1500 mm PU coating. Bluesign® approved. This fabric is used on the hip belt, shoulder straps, and side pockets.

Taped seams: Taped seams improve waterproofing and seam durability. The backpack is practically waterproof, but using an internal bag is recommended in wading and challenging conditions to ensure the contents stay dry.

Size:

  • Torso length: The torso length is adjustable. Fits torso lengths 46-56 cm | 18.5-22.5″
  • User hip circumference: Two different hip belt lengths available.
    • Standard: fits users with a hip circumference of 79-100 cm
    • Large: fits users with a hip circumference of 100-125 cm
  • Note on hip circumference and backpack size: Please note that the measurements refer to the hip circumference at the iliac crest level (not the waist circumference, which is usually smaller). The chosen backpack size only affects the length of the hip belt. The hip belt is removable and therefore interchangeable.
