The big question: do you need it? We personally have used the previous version of Granite Gear Crown that did not have the optional aluminum stay. Despite this, the frame sheet was able to carry everything we managed to pack in just fine. That being said, some Crown 3 owners might want to get one, as you never now when these are no longer available. The backpack itself will last for a long time!

Watch out, crown 3 seems to be prepared for this extension only in recent generation. However, with some duck tape, I managed to mount on my version, too. Seems indeed to add stability. I am carrying my backpack now with 25 kg, which is far Beyond max. recommended (19.5 kg I think).
